Professional Psychology Experience and Areas of Expertise

Dr. Vincent Ruscelli has been seeing patients since the beginning of his internship in 1968.  He has been in private practice as a licensed clinical psychologist in the Houston-Galveston areas since 1975.

Dr. Ruscelli's primary theoretical orientation is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and he has extensive training and experience in marital and family therapy.

Treatment of substance abuse is one of Dr. Ruscelli's specialty areas, using Cognitive Behavioral techniques.  Individual and family treatment is available for substance abuse clients.  Dr. Ruscelli is also a professional advisor for Self Management and Recovery Training (SMART), a recovery method that relies on a scientific approach in the treatment of substance abuse disorders.  This is an alternative to a 12-step approach that emphasizes individual responsibility and the belief that substance use is a choice and not a disease, whether the problem is alcohol, nicotine, other drugs, gambling, sex, or food.  SMART Recovery is considered a support group that teaches motivation enhancement, effective coping with urges, problem solving, and life style balance.  Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) methods are employed in this process.  There is no charge for SMART Recovery groups. 

Dr. Ruscelli has extensive training in evaluating and treating Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and works with the individual and family in coordinating therapy, as well as home, educational, and medical interventions.  Experience in psychological evaluation, cognitive methods, behavioral methods, family therapy, and school consultation make him well qualified to evaluate and treat ADD.

Anger management is also one of Dr. Ruscelli's areas of expertise.  Interventions include cognitive, behavioral, marital/family, and communication skills training.

The Center for Psychology offers psychodiagnostic testing of emotional and behavioral disorders, as well as personality assessments and intellectual assessments, including L-3 evaluations for law enforcement officers.

Dr. Ruscelli works with all age groups and has over 30 years of experience working with children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients in either individual or family approaches.
